I had no idea that hosta was edible!!! There are so many varieties too. I have many, but I never ate one. Here in Connecticut the war is about getting the deer to stop eating them.

I had never considered hosta. How are they prepared in Japan Yama? As Evonne points out, deer like them. Bambi suffers no bad consequences, so why not try?

Well, in part, because many garden varieties are so expensive, and the deer nibble them back here in the Northeast. Thanks, Yama, I'll try some leaves when I prune for pretty.

Similarly, I've learned that daylilies (Hemerocallis) are tasty. Not only in the flower bud stage which we're familiar with from Mu Shu preparations, but also the new shoots. They grow like weeds even when up-rooted, upside down in the compost pile over winter? Spring shoots are deliciously nutty and tender.

Where can I get one of those t-shirts?

I could certainly attest to H.plantaginea FLOWERS are being not only edible, but tasty as well.
Few years ago in a fancy oriental restaurant our order came decorated with a nice white fragrant flowers. When I made a comment that they look pretty much like a hosta's flowers waiter said that they are indeed hosta's flowers and they are edible.
I was only one who ate them that day.
Since then I converted all my friends into hosta-flowers-eaters, by serving them during the dinners at my place :-))
I tried flowers of almost all varieties I grow, but plantaginea's are far superior to all other.

All hostas and daylilies are not the same! Some varieties of hostas may be edible, I've heard that too, but I don't know. Be careful!

I've heard some daylily hybrids are NOT edible. The original orange-flowered variety is reportedly edible, but some people have allergies to them and in large quantities they can be harmful.

This makes sense to me because in my brief forays into herbalism, I've found that some varieties of a species have a particular medicinal effect and some do not or the effect is not as strong.
