From my kitchen window

Some people landscape for curb appeal - me, I want to have a good view out my windows. The kitchen window view is very important since I spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Fall is a great season here on the coast (it almost makes up for the lousy springs), and the view in the last few weeks has been very satisfying for me. As you can see, I love ornamental grasses, and birds (Project Feeder Watch starts next week!)

Early morning sun lights up the landscape with assorted Miscanthus and Panicum grasses.

Turning the eyes to the right, M. gracillimus is in full bloom. Those are Window Alert bird decals visible at the top of the window.

Miscanthus malepartus seedheads in front of M. Cabaret not blooming yet. Actually, Cabaret has never bloomed for me but I still have hopes that maybe this year.

And that was a turkey feather on the windowsill in the first few shots, dropped by one of these guys.

Oh, did I mention that Project Feeder Watch starts on November 14?

The view from the window is foreshortened so it looks sort of like a jungle out there. Although, to be honest, my yard is much closer to a jungle then to a formal garden.

To show that I do sometimes go outside, and that there is some separation out there, I took this photo of the same landscaping from the side.

Claire,

Your garden is as beautiful as ever. I always love to see your photos when you post. You inspired me last year with your great winterberry photos and this year I did buy a bunch of winterberry shrubs for my backyard. Thanks for sharing such wonderful, inspiring photos.

Claire, Your gardens are such an inspiration. If I were a wild creature, I would definitely want to hang at your house. Thank you for sharing such beauty!

Your birds are very, very lucky! And, as usual, another tip from Claire; those window decals may be just what I need for spring and summer. I have one window that two little guys hit this past summer and I think both strikes were fatal. Did you notice an appreciable difference after putting them up, Claire?

Thanks for showing us your wonderful view. Great planting job!

Thanks Susan and Lisa - my garden is not to everyone's taste, but it suits my interests and the surrounding rural area.

Jane: I just put the decals on the windows in the middle of September so I haven't had too much experience yet. I'm still hearing an occasional thud, but I haven't seen splatters on the window and haven't found any bodies, so I'm hoping the impact was at a slow speed or glancing.

I used to hear a SICKENING THUD! with a visible mark on the window, and there would be bodies on the ground.

I'm trying two types of decals, one has frosty leaves or other images, and the other is a spider web. You can see them both on this photo from the outside. The decals must be placed on the outside or the birds don't see them, and I tried to place them where the reflection seemed to show open sky. The birds presumably fly straight at that open sky.

It's a little annoying to have the view obstructed by the decals, but they're not too obtrusive and I've left room to aim my camera.

An unexpected bonus came at sunset one day when I looked out and saw the decal lit by the sun.

Good Idea Claire,
I will think about that for my windows too now.

Great PICS!
