50% off bulbs at Christmas Tree Shops

Bulbs are now half their already discounted price at CTS. The store on Route 1 in Saugus (Lynnfield?) had a large selection as of yesterday. I'm grateful bulbs are only good for the year they are purchaced and can't be kept for years like seeds or I would have had a garbage can full of bulbs to save for next year!

They do have some hardy bulbs, but you have to know what you're looking for (or take a chance). That's how I started growing Fritillaria meleagris - Checkered Lily (aka Snake's Head Fritillary, I think ...) which is now one of my faves.

I'm actually not sure if the bulbs are cheaper at CTS than at my local nursery, because sometimes they seem about the same price.

Also check your local Agway, grain & big box stores, as they will also start marking down their bulbs, if they haven't already.
Two years ago when the weather was so whacky until December, I got over 90% off on loads of tulips because no one was buying them. I planted on December 1st that year- had a tremendous show in my own yard, and many more to put in a local Adopt-a-Spot.
The ground had only top-frozen about 1.5" at that time, and I just pulled back the frozen part plus a little more, put in the bulbs and put it back. Worked like a charm.
