First Frost date?

| I don't have a lot of dahlias but would like to preserve the few that I do. Did I miss the first frost date in the Northeast (CT) or its still to come by?
There are a couple of flowers still blooming on my Dahlia, so I think I still have time, but quite clueless.

| After several brushes with frost, we had our first one a couple of weeks ago. So my dahlias are safely (more or less) in the basement. The callas are still outside in the window boxes since they stay warmer than the flower beds. I should probably get them soon, though. The usual recommendation with dahlias is to wait until after they are frosted, then dig the tubers for storage. The first frost is usually mild enough to not damage anything a few inches below ground. The flowers don't seem to usually last - at least mine don't - so if I want them, I try to cut them the day before a frost warning. Since we adopted the vegetarian cat inside flowers are a bit of a challenge. His current record is something like 5 seconds from the time the flowers are arranged in the vase to the time he has them destroyed on the floor. |
