taking care of a small tree

Hello all,

I'm a huge newbie when it comes to gardening and plants. I need advice for something but because I don't even know the terms I will have to describe some stuff.

I have this plant http://imageshack.com/a/img853/5500/on3y.jpg
I forgot its name, but it's an African tree that I had since last spring. Last summer it was big with branches, leaves and many flowers. In the fall it lost all its leaves and many branches for some reason (possibly the cold - it was outside on the balcony). I kept it inside since and have continued to water it as required and advice from the person I bought it from (who had grown it from a seed): water only when the dirt is dry. I did that but nothing happened to it all winter.

The last few months there is a second stem that started growing from a root. It grew and a 3rd stem started growing from that root as well. I didn't know what to do so I let it grow and it now has leaves and a some flowers whereas the main plant does not have anything.

I would like to get this plant back like it was, with many branches, leaves and flowers when more sun is available but I don't know what I should do.

Any advice ?

Thank you
