Transplanting Hint: Water Water Water

Ok, I'm just obeying an injunction I saw on this forum:

"Start a New Thread"!

Water is, I think, the most important element in transplanting.

You can often get by with less-than-ideal soil, &, as long as you protect new transplants from the sun until they perk back up & start to grow again, you can push the limits of ideal temperature.

but they are absolutely dependent on water.

Plants' root systems are something like our arteries & veins:

Our veins & arteries are dependent upon the tiniest, most fragile capillaries.

Chop off the capillaries, & we aren't likely to survive.

A plant's tiny root hairs are the "on-site" mechanisms for absorption of water.

Transplanting inevitably tears off a lot of these root hairs, leaving the plant vulnerable to dehydration.

I always

water the plant the day or night before I'm going to move it,

then I plant it in its new pot & submerge the pot in a tub of water until no more bubbles arise,

then I put it in the shade & out of the dehydrating wind & check it & water it at least once a day.
