dog poo in the garden

My husband put together a raised bed for a new garden last year. Since it was too late in the season to plant, he filled the area with chunks of sod, a dead rat that the dog killed & dog poo. The dog is a small house dog & does run where other dogs run when we walk. I've heard many warnings about possible parasites, disease etc. I understand there's not a huge risk, but does anybody know if there is anything we can do to sterilize the area, or would it be ok to just clean up the area & fill it with good soil?

If I were going to plant food crops on that site, I'd remove the soil & replace it, but when organic matter decays & returns to the soil (composting), it neutralizes many contaminants.

You might post on the Soil Compost & Mulch Forum;
lots of knowledgeable & helpful people over there.
