black spots on gardenias

I have two gardenias and two dwarf gardenias that have developed a powdery black coating all over the leaves. I can rub it off with my fingers, but, that's a lot of leaves:) My plants also have several leaves that are turning yellow. Anyone know what this is and what to do about it?

Perhaps it's sooty mold. If so, look for aphids or, more likely with gardenia, scale or mealybugs.

In many parts of the country, the general LAW of gardenias is "If you have Gardenia, you shall have whitefly."

So, there's another possiblity for you to check in to.
