I don't know how they do it, but the answer is Yes! the worms will find the goodies. Sometimes it takes a while, especially if the surrounding soil is dry or extremely sandy. Make a point of keeping the lasagna as moist as a squeezed-dry damp sponge; use the finger-poke-test every day and gently add water when your finger comes up dry.

Don't be discouraged. Not too long ago I was in your shoes. Then I learned from the various GW forums about lasagna gardening & composting in 2005. Now as a rule, I always prep a bed with layers of newspapers, used coffee grounds, compost, etc. I was digging in one of those beds this morning doing my spring planting, it was wonderful. I had 2-3 inches of black humus-y soil and earthworms!!

The worms will come. I too have that lovely clay soil. It was devoid of worms my first year. I'm in my 6th year gardening and after steadily composting, I have lots of worms.
