In-ground or above-ground?

Just had the back yard cleared, some trees cut, and now sunlight gets in. I would like to start a small vegetable garden in the back and have an area of roughly 20' x 30' that is going to now get good sun and is fairly level. Before I have the landscapers in to finish off the yard, I'm trying to decide on whether an in-ground or above-ground vegetable garden would be best, or if one is usually better.

If in-ground, I can have the garden area excavated to whatever depth is best and then fill it with the appropriate mixture of soil, compost, etc. I plan on framing it in and having it fenced, primarily to keep the dogs out of it but there are also deer around here.

Is an in-ground vegetable garden inherently better than an above-ground?

If anybody can point me to any good reference books, I would appreciate it. Amazon has thousands of them, but perhaps somebody has had personal experience with using one that helped them.

First gardening in almost 40 years since summers on my grandparents' farm in eastern Kentucky.

Thanks.
