UK flowers not normally grown in US
| | |
Posted by John UK (plutus1947@hotmail.com) on Thu, May 18, 06 at 3:17
| I live in UK and have a friend from the Washington area, US. She has a garden but is not permitted to plant the ground and has to rely on outdoor pot plants.
She is wondering if there are any seeds suitable for outdoor pots which are not normally available or grown in the US, are prevalent in the UK but can be grown in her area.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
John

| Do you mean Washington State, or Washington District of Columbia on the East coast? If your friend is in Washington State and on the West side of the state, our climate is almost a mirror of the UK. Other than that, I'm not sure what you are asking. With collectors type nurseries, internet ordering from seed companies like Chilterns and Plant World of Devon, unusual plants are not hard to acquire. Was there something specific she was interested in? |

| Mor, you and I were thinking exactly alike :-)) I had just moved off to read of couple of other threads and then came back to respond to this, but you beat me to it! John, Mor's advice is entirely correct - other than some very new UK introductions (and many of the best DO come from your neck of the woods), most UK plants can be obtained rather easily from better garden centers and nurseries or from seed catalogs. This is in reference to western Washington state, not Washington D.C. :-) |

| It would accurate to include Washington, DC has having common availability of most UK plants... and considering that the National Arborateum is in DC, many non-common plants are also available. Actually, I think the gardening-shoe is on the other foot, there being a multitude of "common to US" plants which are not easily obtainable [or grown] in UK, whereas most UK plants are adaptable to both coasts (as well as inland) of the US and are considered easily available. Upon re-reading the post... do you mean that your friend is from Washington, but living in UK? Or vice versa? Or, to clarify the issue - where are the outdoor pots - in UK or one of the Washingtons in US? |

| Thank you all for your replies. Having never had a garden myself and therefore knowing very little about seeds and culivation, I was extremely grateful for your comments. To clear up a couple of questions asked. My friend actually lives in Washington State and I live in the UK. She asked if there were any flower seed plants that she could grow in her pots which are not normally grown in the US but are prevalent in the UK. When I posted my question I thought that this is the kind of reply I would receive. I know that large parts of the US are similar to the UK and therefore there would only be a few (if any) flower seeds which are not grown or available on both sides of the 'pond'. Thanks again for all your help. John |
