Cohabitants for banana

On my rooftop i have a banana living in a rather large container. I'd like to plant something else in it, to use space more efficiently.
A couple years ago I had two bananas, and had the bright idea of letting them share space with spider plants, which was a very bad idea, as they are terribly invasive, and the roots go everywhere. They made short work of my bananas.
Now I am considering Tradescantia zebrina (wandering jew). They also spread a lot, but they don't put out a lot of roots in the same way.
I'd like to be able to divide the banana if it puts up shooters, and i wouldn't mind damaging this groundcover.
Do you think it would work ok, or any other suggestions?
Thanks,
