New to potato gardening, need some help please...

Hello all,

I planted some seed potatoes about a month or so ago, and now I have some healthy plants that are already nearing 5 to 6 in. The type of potatoes are "Yukon Gold" I have been trying to follow the planting instructions as closely as possible, but I am still confused with the whole covering the plant with soil thing--it says in the planting instructions to cover the plants with soil when they reach approx. 5 to 6 in (the same height as my plants). Do I have to cover the entire plant? 75% of the plant? If I have to cover the whole plant, won't that kill it due to lack of sunlight? I know potatoes will go bad if they are exposed to sunlight--but is that the actual tuber itself, or if the plant is exposed to sunlight will it cause the potato to go bad as well? If anyone can break this down "potato-head" style for me I would greatly appriciate it!

Thanks,
