Help in identifying a plant

Can you help me identify this plant? I am not computer savvy so can't post a photo. The entire plant is purple. It has a tubular stem. It looks like it would be a good plant for a hanging basket but I found it in my yard. It is a perennial (popped up in two places in the garden of my new house). I think it likes the sun. It's leaves are across from each other with a tiny bluish flower sticking out of the center. It looks like the long 3 to 4 inch leaves grew in a pair and then opened to reveal the tiny blue flower. The root looks like a tube (I thought it was a huge earthworm). To me, it looks like a purple "bird of paradise" without the crown (I know that doesn't make sense, but the leaves are pointed like a B of P) but I am completely ignorant about anything involving gardening. If the description doesn't help, I can get my husband to post a photo. Thanks.
