Sounds like they could be dead. You said they are just two pots of soil, but if there are branches sticking up, bend a branch to see if it is flexible or snaps. Snapping could be a sign it is dead, but look inside the branch then to see if you see green or brown. (Green=good, brown=bad.)

If they literally are two pots of soil with no remaining plant parts above the soil, then I would suggest recycling all that potting soil into another pot with a new live plant in it!

Well.....as they say on ER..."Call it"!
After all avenues have peen persued......there comes time to "call it"....pronounce the poor plant dead....
And that time is when you are sick of looking at the pot of soil.

the miniature roses don't last long at all- they come from the store already pot-bound, and have nothing in the way of reserves to help them through a drought...

Thanks to all for your help - I wanted to repot but I didn't want to kill the poor things if they had a chance. I think they are definitely done for. Any suggestions on some easy, low maintenance, potted plants for zone 8? It gets pretty hot here - temps in the 100s aren't uncommon.
