New maple care

I planted a maple in October of 04. We have hot summers here in the high mountains of Idaho. When spring arrived and the tree started to leaf out, I noticed that the very top leaves of this 20' beauty did not fully form. I have some bare branches where there are no leaves at all. I think I have given it enough water. I will run the hose at a small drip for a day and it still does not look healthy to me. Any suggestions? This tree has a 5-6" caliper and was dug & burlaped on a tree farm not far from my house so I would assume that it has been through a few summers.

I wouldn't fertilize it at this time. Often, root manipulations like repotting or late transplanting have an adverse effect on overall plant cold-hardiness. It's likely that what you're seeing now isn't root related, but rather bud/twig dieback from winter cold and/or dessication. Do make sure that the tree gets adequate water until established, though.
