I.D. a flower I planted

Hi, I was given this flower .. came back up on it's own the following year, but I can't remember what it is. Main characteristic is it's very tall (about 4 or 5 ft.) and has comparitively very small purple flowers only on top -- just 3 sets of clusters about the size of a walnut in the shell.

The stem is most interesting ... there is only a central stem and about every 5 inches there are just two leaves -- 5 in. long and for each one there is another one that mirrors it 180 degrees -- above and below, and repeating are the exact same thing except that every other one is off-axis by 90 degrees.

I might be able to get a pic posted somewhere ... sound familiar to anyone?

Thanks much for any advice,

Peace.
