death of weeping cherry tree

Early this summer my 5 year old weeping cherry tree died suddenly. It had bloomed and leafed out, but within a weeks time, wilted. Now it is completely dried up and branches are brittle. The only thing that has changed is that I put 2 tree fertlizer spikes around it in the early spring. No evidence of voles, but I haven't pulled the tree up yet. Did I kill it? Any thoughts?

I doubt you killed it with two fertilizer spikes. Something else has been going on for a while.

I'd suggest that, rather than pull it up, you dig it up. That way you can take a good look at the roots.
