English Primrose

When I moved to the Boise, Idaho area from Maryland about 15 years ago, I brought my old fashioned English Primrose plants with me. I planted them in a very shady area (Shade is an absolute must around here. This is desert country.) and they faithfully came up year after year. Then we had a winter that was not so cold and they didn't come up that year and haven't been back since then. Fortunately, I had given some of the same type to my daughter and hers are still growing strong and faithfully.

Question: Is it the soil? This is alkaline soil here. How can I make soil that will agree with old English Primrose?

Thanks for any ideas.
