Help for a sad chrysanthemum

I looked elsewhere on this forum, but didn't see either chrysanthemum or mums, so I'm asking here. My poor little mum, I don't know the variety, it was given to me (it's small and yellow if that helps) just won't grow. The center died last year and this year it has nine puny, woody stalks growing up around where the center use to be. There are no bugs and no mold, but it stays short and spindley, and tho there are a few buds, they turn brown and die before they open. Some of the older leaves near the bottom have yellow spots on them. It is planted in full sun, but it's a little crowded around it and it is the only one planted (dying of lack of mate??) I know nothing about mums so any help would be appreciated. Also, would it be worthwhile just to get cuttings from it and start over?
