One gardener's trash...

Someone threw out some plants today (I'm not above saving discarded plants someone else considered trash), but I'm not sure what they are or where they need to be. Their bulbs are about the size of a lemon, huge roots coming from the bulb and two green leaves about 2' - 2.5' long, 2" wide, and rather rounded, not exactly pointed on the ends. Are these some kind of lillies perhaps? And if so, do they require sun or shade and what about soil prep? And WHY would someone just toss them out like that? I believe they were potted, not ground planted because of a huge amount of dark potting soil also dumped. It appeared that they were perhaps planted too deeply in the pots from the incredible amount of white vs. green on each leaf.
