My Salpiglossis broke!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by nicopico016 California (Bay Area (My Page) on

About four inches down the main stem, my salpiglossis (chocolate royal) snapped, the entire plant is only about 12 inches maybe a little more in height, i just transplanted it about a week ago. It didnt break off completely but enough that its limping over between 45 to 90 degrees. Not to mention that on the part that broke there are about ten flower buds that just started showing some color and are fit to bloom in a few days (if they make it), one of which has already started to open up.

you dont realize how desparate i am, i really dont know what to do and i dont want the flowers to die before they even got a chance to bloom.

the only thing i could think of (and i know this might sound silly) was to re-align the broken part of the stem with a tiny piece scotch tape.

Please help :(

RE: My Salpiglossis broke!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since salpiglossis is an annual, and you have a fairly long growing season, you might get some recovery on it. Scotch tape is not the answer. You could try propping it up with a twiggy branch, or a metal stake called a "gathering ring" (commonly inexpensively available in several heights at the big box garden centers). But if the stem tissue is broken, the part above the break might slowly die off without all the buds opening.

If you grow them again, you could have supports in place before they grow tall.
