I have a bougainvillea in a large pot I think 18 inches, its doing great but I don't know what is the proper size of trellis I should have . I have a small one fanning out purchased at home depot now I'm afraid to train it on this one and what do I do when the plant gets bigger. I want the trellis inside the pot. What do I do to train my plant now that its just starting to grow.

RE: trellis size

Are you growing this plant indoors or out?

You can actually grow it as if it were a shrub - pruning to keep it to an acceptable size. It will still flower for you.

If you are growing it on the porch and want it to scramble you'll need something that will let it romp for at least ten feet (and be fastened at the top to something sturdy so it doesn't get damaged by the wind.)

Would a structure such as a tomato frame give you the result you were looking for?

tHANKS i DID START WITH A TOMATO TRELLIS BUT IT LOOKED SO BIG FOR SUCHA SMALL PLANT . If I let it grow like a bush does it gro up or just out. I just planted another one to climb over a wall so that on I will let loose how ever it wants to go. The one in the pot outside is the one I want to train into something tall maybe 5 feet. thanks in advance.. I just joined this site because I decided to start gardening seriously. I am growing hydrangeas, gardenias and mandevillas for the first time among many others the list is too long. Its hard to keep up with all the plants around my house so I'm grate ful for any advice.
