what to plant for fall?

Hi I need some advice for low maintenance flowering plants that I can plant now. In the spring, I planted bulbs and seeds, the results were less than spectacular considering the amount of work it took. I have 4 beds, in a formal, English design (a circle divided into quads with walkways between) Each bed is about 100 sq ft. I am renting, so was hesitant to invest in topsoil, etc. but will do so next spring. In the meantime, any suggestions?
