Lace Leaf Maple

I have a dwarf Lace Leaf Maple in my front yard that is about two years old. This past winter was a hard one and we had tons of snow! In the spring, we noticed that the snow piled up so much on the Japanese Maple, that it broke a major limb off of it.

Now, I can't remember if the leaves are suppose to be green on this shrub in the summer.

It has always been dark red/wine colored leaves, but right now it has greenish leaves with the new shoots coming in the purple/dark red color.

Is the shrub sick? Or is the normal summer leave color greenish turning to purple for fall?

I don't want it to die!

You should probably post this on the Tree forum ... there are a lot of knowledeable tree people on that forum.

Or the Maple forum. But I will warn you that there are literally thousands of varieties of Japanese Maples.

Usually the dissectums are grafted to stem stock anywhere from a few inches to 3 or 4 feet above ground. Often, when mass is reduced in the canopy without an accompanying reduction in root volume, it encourages suckering from the stem stock which is often a completely different species than the grafted portion of the tree, so it's not unusual for a grafted tree to exhibit two distinctly different foliage types. Determine where the graft union is and prune off all growth occurring below the graft. If what I suspected is occurring, the unwanted growth will sap vigor and certainly spoil the appearance of the tree.
