Growing corn in north central Arizona (4000ft elevation)

I moved to northern Arizona last year and built raised beds all of which are 18" deep and are 8'x4' and 8'x8' in size. The soil is a very good mixture of topsoil, compost and steer manure. I started Country Genteleman corn which I have been growing successfully for the last 10 years in northern California(10 foot stocks 2 fully developed ears per stock). I started the corn here in AZ in May and kept it evenly moist and well fertilized. We had very strong winds and very dry conditions(5% humidity) from May-July until the monsoon started. The corn started off well but then it became very stressed, stopped growing at 4ft, wilted and did not produce any corn. Has anyone else had this problem in the southwest? I am thinking next year of starting the corn in June just before the monsoon starts.
