Giant Bird of Paradise - roots a problem

ahibbs

I have a stamped asphalt courtyard, and my giant bird of paradise has raised the asphalt so much that I cannot open a set of doors and had to have my gate trimmed up. Cannas are also popping right through it. I haven't seen a reference anywhere as to giant bird roots being a problem, so it may be that the asphalt surface is the whole problem. I am going to be replacing the surface with something harder, but I'm wondering if I will need to build in some kind of protection against the roots, or if I'm just going to have to take the bird out altogether. Any advice from anyone out there? - Mary
