indoor plants, hanging

Am I in the right forum, I hope? Have been doing a little research about plants that are good for hanging, indoors, and have been reading that a self-watering pot is ideal for this. Does anyone have advice?

Relevant info: We live in suburban NYC. We have window AC units in the summer, and gas, radiator heat in the winter. Spot where I'm hoping to hang plants (three windows across) is south-facing, but light is filtered in the warmer weather by a very full, leafy tree outside. Do get low winter sun in early afternoons. Have very small children who won't be able to reach the plants, but we probably should rule out anything that might drop berries or poisonous leaves onto the floor.

Thanks for any advice, sources here! Planning a trip to another garden center tomorrow.

Many thanks!
