white stuff in the dead old sod

| Hi all-
First time visiting and posting. I am removing some old, mostly dead, sod in order to lay some new sod. While removing the old sod, I noticed there is a bunch of white chalky dust and clods underneath, and on top, of certain areas of the old sod. What is this? Is there anything I need to know about it before laying the new sod? There are also a bunch of insects (earwig looking bugs) in the soil. Is that a problem? If so, what should I do about it?
I am getting ready to move out of state in a month or so, so I don't have a ton of time. Thanks very much for any assistance you can provide!

| You might find your best help for this problem over at the Lawn forum. It sounds that someone may have laid sod before but failed to water thoroughly but it's worth your while to ask the pros, IMHO. |

| Have you ruled out the possibility that demolition debris (old drywall) might have been piled there at one time & not thoroughly cleaned up? Al |

| Funny you should say that Al, it was my first thought. Only because I found a bunch of old plaster in the ground in my back yard from when they re-dry walled my house. lol |
