winterizing

This is my first garden and I'm not sure how or what to do for over the winter. I'm in southern NH.
What do I do with my astilbe? One of them is crispy and I've had to trim it up a bit but the others look as green as ever. Do I eventually trim them down to the ground? or not? Did I do bad to the one I did trim?

I have newly planted an azalea and an andromeda and would like to protect them from the weight of the snow. Do I build something around them or wrap them in burlap or..????

What do the rest of you do when the snow is a comin'? I'd like to do as much cleaning in the fall as possible so I don't have a meltly mess in the spring.

Mostly you don't have to do a thing....
But it IS easier in the spring if you do fall clean up.
Wait until frost kills stuff than cut the dead plants down....leave about 4 inches of stems of most things, so you can see where they were...
I wouldn't do a thing with the aselia and andromodea....do you see others with burlap covering on their shrubs where you live?
The biggest danger to broad leaved evergreens in the winter is dessication, and a good snow cover helps prevent that.
