 o
white powder on Crepe Myrtle flower balls.

This is the first time we have had this powder type (mildew?) on our crepe myrtle. The pods that form before blooming are covered with it or it may be after? The bushes bloomed beautifully, then stopped and have started to bloom all over again except the white stuff is there. I felt it and it is almost like flour? Any ideas what caused this and how to prevent it? Jim

Jim. Crape myrtle flowers don't have balls, they have stamens. ;-)

Anyway, those little balls are the seed capsules that form after the blooms are all finished being pollinated. I would assume that you have an infestation of powdery mildew, though I can't make an absolute diagnosis without an image.

If you do have a mild case of powdery mildew, I have found that applications of horticultural oil (summer weight) can be very helpful. Some people report success with baking soda solutions as well, but I can't speak to that.

Do some searches (google) on powdery mildew and you will find some important cultural activities to help you prevent another outbreak next year. Do you know what Crape Myrtle cultivar you have? Some are exceedingly resistant to this common disease while others will become infested routinely.

Thanks Dorie, Who would have thought they would call a ball a stamin, Maybe a strike? I'll try the Baking soda. It's not safe for me to keep around the kitchen anyway, since I accidentally put some in a recipe I was making instead of baking powder. I'll also try the google search. . Thanks for the assist. Hope the storm missed you, Jim
