Problems with Pachysandra

Hi. Moved recently to Memphis. Large area of front yard had a beautiful patch of pachysandra. Before we moved in, a large tree had been there but was removed due to a storm. Now the area is exposed to a lot of sun and the pachysandra is not fairing too well. We are planning to add a replacement shade tree this fall. In the meantime, there are some difficult weeds and very tough tree or shrub shoots growing up through the pachysandra (helped by the sunny exposure?). What's the best remedy? I'm thinking of tilling the area and replanting with pachysandra again after get a tree back in.
