I HAVE THREE MATURE BIRDS OF PARADISE APPROXIMATELY 6-8 FEET HIGH. THEY ALL RECIEVE 6-8 HOURS OF DIRECT DESERT SUNLIGHT A DAY AND ARE PLANTED IN GROUND. THEY ARE WATERED 3 TIMES A DAY WITH BUBBLERS. PROBLEM ONE, FOR YEARS THE LEAVES BROWN AND CURL UP. I MAYBE ATTRIBUTE THIS TO OUR EXCESSIVE AND DRY HEAT, I LIVE IN PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA. SECOND PROBLEM, THE LAST MONTH THE STEMS HAVE BEEN ROTTING AT THE BASE AND THE ENTIRE STEM FALLS OVER AND DIES. WHAT'S THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM AND HOW CAN I CORRECT IT? I ADMIT I ONLY SUPPLEMENT THEIR WATERING WITH MIRACLE GROW APPROXIMATELY ONCE A MONTH. PLEASE HELP! I WOULD HATE TO LOSE SUCH MATURE PLANTS.

You're loving your plants to death. And unfortunately, you may lose them. When it comes to bird of paradise, watering three times a day spells rot. As in ROT! All that water has destroyed the roots. That's why the stems are falling over. Why the leaves are browning -- no roots to support them. And why the plants are failing. Further, stop the fertilizer of what ever kind. Not needed for this plant.

Cut back on the water! Only water them in the early morning hours and check on them. If they are stressed a lot during the day, don't worry! I water on a timer for 30 minutes a day (15 minutes at 6am and 15 min at 6Pm EST) This cuts my plants stress and I have not lost any yet. Now I live in Ga, and I am not sure about your heat, but try that. See if it helps. Oh, for root rot which you now have, use a funginex solution as directed on the label. This will help your plants.
