would planting garlic society help??

While most of my gardening "energies" are geared to raising food for fresh and preserving later, I find using the galvanized hardware cloth to be the best deterrant of these nuisance animals.

My son built 9 cedar boxes measuring approximately 3 ft. x 6 ft in size, to which I nailed or stapled 1/2 inch hardware cloth on the bottom. These boxes provide me with all of the area I need to raise crops (2 or 3 family size).

Only one box was left un-wired - and I noted an invasion of this summer in that one box, otherwise, the critters go right up to the very side of the box, and come up - not able to penetrate through the bottom wire.

I think if I were to plant bulbs, I would make small baskets of this type of wire or line the planting hole with it, if tunneling animals were a problem.

Traps are an alternative - but I've not used them.

Sometime ago, I took mothballs - tied in a panty hose and attached to the hose - which I allowed to drip into an active burrow. That seemed to chase them into the neighbor's yard, where they waited until it became habitable again, then returned.

If you can catch one, kill it, and bury in the run, that also seems to deter them.

P.S. I don't recommend moth balls anymore, since I became a "born-again" organic gardener -
