Preparing flowerbeds for winter

Posted by gee_oh_nyc 7 (gee_oh_nyc@yahoo.com) on

As people in my neighbohood are beginning to throw out Christmas trees, I have been cutting branches from the discarded trees to put over my flowerbeds. Is it possible to put too many down? Are there some plants that prefer to be uncovererd? What about plants that maintain "crowns" during the winter (daisy, columbine, hellenium, asters) should they be covered at all?
Let me know
Thanks
George

Hi George,

I would ONLY cover plants that particularly need winter protection. Otherwise, you'll be blocking light and air circulation from your plants, which they'll need regardless of outside temperatures. Also, the needles from the christmas trees tends to be acidic, and may be too acidic for many of your plants.

If you grow strawberries, or rhododendrons - save the needles for later to use as mulch once the ground warms up.
