What are these things?

I have spent the last few weeks clearing out years of dead shrubbery and underneath a thick layer of leaves and pine needles I am finding tons of a weird kind of plant (they kind of look like tarantulas!) and they have long roots which make them hard to pull from the ground. Often they come out in clumps. What are these things really?

Look like "roots" of an asparagus fern. (Not a true asparagus.) Possibly this one:

There are many plants with tuberous roots like that - asparagus fern, spider plant, daylily all come to mind. Without an ID, I'd grow one or a couple out to see what they are before discarding them. How about trying your local county office of your state university's agricultural extension service.

they also have the look of some of my dahlia tubers.. Find one of the root tuber and see if it has a eye on it, then plant in a pot to see what happens. Also looks like a daylily.
