Camellia Snow Flurry still blooming in January

OK the flowers are straggling. But I had a few buds that did not open before the cold spell in Dec and they were blooming in early Jan.

My iris were up in early Jan!

What is with the weather?

I just got my Fairweather catalog. I'm still mulling over the camellias...Snow Flurry seems to be doing very well for you. I think I will try picking this one up at the open house this year. I also like the description that the plant is dense. How is the form for you? Possibly, I will give April Dawn a second try. They have treetubes now so it isn't so expensive.
Winter Rose looks interesting too. It's suppose to be a miniature.
A lot of these camillias are starting to turn up locally.

    Hi, Loretta.

I do not know your location, however I am in Harrison
near Newark. It is the border of Z6a and Z6b, and I think,
it is colder than where pontesmanny is.

My Winter Flurry opens its buds well in Nov. But it does
not keep flowing that long, freezening weather stops it.
I also have a April dawn, this is the first winter for the
plant in my backyard. I do not know what is going to
happen. I will see the result in 3 months.

Thanks ermazi. You are still a little south of me. That is good to know. I would probably be better off with something that blooms a little earlier.

Yes, Loretta. We all expect some earlier bloomers,
do you know what cultivars are hardy and earlier
    blooming?

Hi, Pontesmanny, I once saw you know your lowest temp.
record at your zip, how did you find the information?
I would like to know that record of my zip area.

    Loretta:
The plant is very weeping and spreading (I could email you a digital pic if you wish). Camellia Forest Nursery suggests pruning on their website but Fairweather said to let it be and I did.

Winter's Star blooms the earliest. Winter's Interlude and Winter's Rose are the hardiest (according to what I have read on the Fairweather website).

    Ermazi:
You can examine the buds If there is no brown on the tips then the buds are definitely fine. New growth on camellias is the most susceptible to frost damage. The plant should be just fine even if you had temps near zero. Mine did fine for the past two winters and we had several days in a row with nightime temps in the single digits.

Weather.com has a page with records for all the days in the year.

    Thanks Pontesmanny.
Fairweather calls Snowfurry a dense spreading plant. I wouldn't mind seeing a pic if you get around to it.
How long has the blooming season been on these plants for you?

Snowflurry starts blooming in late October and most years ends in Dec.
Open flowers do not like temps below 28-29 C but unopened buds are fine at least to 11 F (and probably lower). So the flower show is quite temperature dependent. This year Nov was very good.

At my yard, the Snowflurry started at Nov.10 and last
about 20 days last year, shorter than where Pontesmanny
is. And I have a lot buds frosted out, some thing about
50%. I did not measure the low temp.limit for unopened buds, but feel kind of 20s. Maybe I am wrong.

I guess that is always what puts me off in the end. The start blooming time is too close to the real cold. It's like growing mexican sage. Based on that, I think I will start off with Winter Rose if it is there when I go.
