Why not ask the same question on the Rose Forum?

I agree that the Rose forum might be a better place, but it is nice to talk to local people too. I think containing/controling a climbing rose could be done with tying up unruly branches, and trimming any which get too out of control. Be careful of the thorns, you wouldn't want visitors getting scratched.

I ordered zephirine drouhin which is nearly thornless. I hope it would survive in our zone.

Yes, I have that one. I really like it though it gets blackspot. It is forgiven because it has no thorns! When I get mine to look like a showpiece, I'll let you know how. BTW, it really looks nice with the large cupped pink columbines like the songbird series.

loretta, I will look into the columbines which you mentioned. Does this climb too? I was thinking of combining with a clematis. For now, all these ideas are just dreams. I have no idea how long the rose which I haven't even received will take to bloom. Does this bloom in the first year? Did you order through web or got this rose from any local nursery? I am also looking for local sources for climbing pinkie. May be I should post this question as a thread in NJ forum.

No, columbine is a short lived perennial. The one I had with ZD was similar to this. That one had a yellow cup and the pink was a perfect match. Too bad it lived like a biennial. I collected seed though.
You can still do the clematis.
