Mahonia media - Winter Sun - report

The plant is doing well. Purchased in April 05 (or 06?)and after watering it through the first summer essentially ignored it. Plant did not really show any dieback :-) and developed a sidebranch :-) but did not flower :-(.

This year there are some nice yellow flowers, particularly noticeable on sunny days. Hopefully it will continue to flower in subsequent years.

OT Edgeworthia chrysantha is also doing well.

RE: Mahonia media - Winter Sun - report

I have been very happy with 'Winter Sun', although the clusters are only 1/3 or 1/4 the size shown in the ads. Also, I expected flowers by Thanksgiving or Christmas and they are just really yellowing up now. The new foliage is all sorts of opalescent muted shades of bronzes, purples and bluish greens, so the plant is worth growing for this alone. Rampant deer and rabbits have never touched any of my 4 different types of Mahonia.
Edgeworthia is unique in its appearance and I am tempted to try other sorts of this plant mentioned on the web, including the more difficult and tender red flowered sort.
Your sort has been trouble free here, also.
