Bear-proof plants?

Posted by smord NJ z6 (My Page) on

Hi! I'm landscaping my yard from scratch and I'm looking for plants that will discourage (or at least not encourage) bears. We have a big bear problem where I live - last year one came through our backyard right next to the house midday on a daily basis - and I have a toddler!

So I'm looking to plant things that won't encourage the bears to come around. Any ideas? Do bears eat viburnum berries?

Thanks!

RE: Bear-proof plants?

Sarah, you might do some research on what bears eat in order to decide what you might plant or not plant. You need to stay away from blueberries and raspberries; they also eat acorns. I've never had them eat any of my viburnum berries, however.
