| This thing is a thug. It was prying shingles off my house. It torques ordinary trellises apart if allowed to reach full growth. It could split the pot. If you put the pot directly on the ground, it will send roots out that will pop up 15 feet away. You could unpot it every year and root prune it. That might work. I used to cut mine down to the ground every year and it would flower. After it became too obstreperous, it took me five years to kill it. Or you could slip it to an enemy and go with some nice annuals, like cypress vine or scarlet runner bean. Seriously, if you can send it up a big tree or pergola made out of 4x4s, and mow around it for about 20 feet, go for it. It's a great plant. I always wished I could grow it up a purple Norway maple, but that's a thug tree. |
