My experience has been that Tomatoes do better as transplants but I know people who direct sow and swear by it. Plenty of time to get those seeds in. I couldn't tell you which varieities would do better or not.

If you direct seed today May first any 75-80 day variety will be ripening around late August into September. You might want to buy some plants to get you harvesting a little sooner... Bob.

Planted mine in milk jugs in march and april. Some are already 4 inches tall. All of mine were winter sowed. They do come up early and still need to be protected from frost.

Agree with Bob even if only one transplant, go for some early ones. Last year planted cherry ones on May 8th and was very happy eatting them in June. Those also produced well into November here.
