skimmia japonica in zone 6?

Wondering what other gardeners' experience has been with this shrub. I'm looking for something evergreen that can tolerate a lot of shade. I saw one last year at Condurso's and liked the way it looked (I know I need a male and female for berries)--but am wondering if the shrub will really thrive in zone 6. Some websites claim it's hardy through zone 6--others through zone 7. It (or rather, they) would be against a tall fence and have an arborvite, andromeda, Rose of Sharons and endless summer hydrangea for neighbors. The soil is acidic. Right now I have an aucuba planted there and it keeps losing leaves--don't think it's happy so I'm looking for a replacement. Would appreciate learning of others' experiences. Thanks!
