Half-dead crepe myrtle (sniff)

Hi, I'm in Flemington in Hunterdon County. My Dynamite crepe myrtle is just now starting to bud, but only on half the tree. I think I've lost one whole trunk, the biggest one. Do I cut the dead one all the way to the ground? If so, will doing something that drastic be too hard on the tree and kill the rest?

Any help is appreciated!

Mine was very late to wake up this year. Watching it every day on pins and needles, but it is slowly coming back, Scratch the bark on the big trunk and look for green. Give it a little more time. It may still leaf out.

I wouldn't worry about it. I bet it makes a full recovery.

There is a stretch of the West Side Highway in NYC that goes by a lot of crape myrtles in Riverside Park. They were leafless until practically summer - I really thought the winter had killed them. They're all in gorgeous bloom now.
