Tomato diseases

Greetings. I'm hoping that someone can give me some advice. I haven't been able to grow good tomatoes in my garden for several years, so I put all 6 plants (different varities) in plastic containers, with a good mix of soil and potting mix. I planted in May, and my plants are bearing lots of fruit. Last week, I noticed some of the leaves at the bottom of the plant were turning yellow and have numerous black spots on them. From this description, can anyone give me a clue as to what may be causing this? It seems to be affecting all of my tomato plants. I did notice some aphids, which I sprayed with a recommended pesticide. Could "overwatering" also cause this condition?Thank you for your advice.

Hi MJ
If you go to the Growing Tomatoes forum and then to the pests and diseases part you will be able to get all kinds of information, especially from Dr. Carolyn Male who has forgotten more about tomatoes than most people will ever know. She is a fund of info and a great person to boot.

I cannot grow tomatoes in my yard, either. Tried again this year after two dormant years and same thing, looks like a blight kills them right off. I too thought of containers, but if it is in the ground, it is probably in the air also, whatever "it" is. Maybe move them NOW, while there is still hope to the other side of the house and give them a shot of something off the shelf at the Garden Shop where you bought them.

RE: Tomato diseases

I have better luck with my upside-down tomatoes than the ones in the ground, as mine get a blight eventually, too, being that I grow mostly heirlooms, which are non-resistant varieties. I have some luck spraying soap-shield on them as well as green-guard, and this year I am trying serenade, a new type of disease fighting, organic spray, for tomatoes and other plants. It seems that in a good year the tomatoes grow so fast they outrun the blight, and I just pick off the dead areas. I'll see what happens this season.
