Do small shade trees exist?

I'm looking to plant a small shade tree (or two) next to my toddler's play area to shelter it from the afternoon sun. The tree would be planted about 20 feet from a wood fence and about 40 feet from the rear of my house. Because of this compact area and to limit the amount of lawn I sacrifice (my son love to run!) I would like a smaller tree.

Are there any small-ish shade trees you could suggest? I am also open to large shrubs. The area obviously gets lots of sun.

Thanks!

There are a lot of small trees. Depends on what you like. Check out Japanese Maple, European Hornbeam, Asiminia Triloba (pawpaw, fruit-bearing). There are also columnar apple trees which grow 10' tall and 2' wide. Kousa dogwood grows 15'-25' tall and has nice white star-shaped flowers this time of year.
