Tree id?

This is probably tough because I don't have a pic but there's this tree that keeps puzzling me. When I drive down highways etc. (part of why I don't have pic!) or am in various other places (where I can get a better look) I see this tree. Note it grow in "cultivated" and wild areas. Most often in full sun. It is low and sort of sprawling. Sometimes almost shrub like. But often resembles a low craggly crabapple. (now that's the shape) as per other details.... it has longish lance shaped leaves that sometimes curl (when its hot/sunny?) they are silvery colored. LIghter on one side than the other. VEry very vaguely hairy (hardly at all) (almost waxy actually?) not shiny at all though. The branches cover much of the trunk as do the leaves. It strikes me or gets my attention because its this silvery tree amongst alot (albeit lovely) green!. I don't usually expect to see silver (trees especially) in NJ. Now it may have been there forever I just didn't notice it. It's fairly all over the place. Any ideas?

recap:

1. silvery leaves

2. low crabapple shape

3 in NJ

4 in "cultivated" and "wilder" and wild areas. :)
