You could try training it up a terrace, providing support to the fruits. I've done this with cucumbers (no support necessary for those).

Hi mulchwoman! I'm in Metuchen, too. When I first ready your post, I assumed that the squash itself was five feet and growing, not the vine!!! I was going to have you run some over to my house on Woodbridge Avenue!

I have yet to try growing veggies...my flowers take up so much of my time as it is!

I wouldn't mind in the least if the acorn squash grew over into my yard as we love it. Tried to grow it here last year but the vine died.

Curl it back gently. I had this gourd last year (supposed to be pumpkin) that was putting out twenty foot vines in all directions. I kept the vines to two gourds and cut all the rest back. didn't bother it a bit but not swearing it won't bother a squash.
