Colorful, yet relatively maintenance free plants/flowers

Good afternoon,

We recently hired a contractor to pave an upper area in the back of our property and at the last minute asked him to also plants some plants/flowers around. Other than possibly killing them all (except the inkberry's) thanks to a major blunder/misuse of Round-Up it turns out we don't really like what he planted at all. This is what he planted and what we're looking for:

3 blue stars, 2 birds nests, 3 sedums and 3 phloxs. We really want low lying plants that don't grow more than about 6" in height but spread out. We also want them to keep their flowers/color more than a typical flowering plant that will flower for a week or two and then just be blah green). The areas the plants/flowers will be in the direct sun for most if not all of the day.

He also planted "bunny ear" grasses (possibly have that name wrong -- they supposedly bloom these white shoots/stems). These are planted more in the corner of the upper area so we can go bigger in height but want the same as above color wise.

Also I'll like to mention we're not home very much except for a couple of hours in the evenings and weekends, so plants/flowers that need to be constantly watered is not going to work for us. Also something I can buy at a Lowes/Home Depot is favorable since going to nurseries gets more expensive.

Any suggestions/ideas would be really helpful and appreciated. Thank you!!
