Do Flies Damage Plants/Flowers?

I live in Asbury Park, a little less than a mile from the shoreline.

Every summer my garden is inundated by flies of all sorts: big black flies, little shiny-green flies -- all sorts of flies -- who spend their time all over my plants and flowers (when they're not buzzing around). Are they doing damage to my plants? My partner thinks they're eating small insects on the flowers. Sure there's evidence of something gnawing away on some of the plants/leaves, but I'm not sure if the flies are the culprits.

Can anyone shed light on the "fly" as a garden pest?

I bought some traps at Home Depot and they work really well. Three bags of the stuff "bagged" so many flies that I believe I interrupted their reproductive cycle -- their numbers where sharply down for a few weeks but are on the rise (time for more traps!).

Would appreciated any knowledge/shared experience.
